Course Objectives

  • Gain an understanding of basic sociological concepts, theories, and research methods
  • Examine social life beyond your own experiences, recognizing the context of cultural and societal patterns, processes, and arrangements for yourself and others; i.e., develop a “sociological imagination.”
  • To strengthen critical thinking and analytical skills by reading and writing critically and integrating ideas and concepts from the course material (lectures, readings, videos, discussions, and facilitations).

Course Requirements

  • This class will stress reading, writing, analysis, and discussion.
  • Students will be responsible for making annotations to PDF’s of 14 readings.
  • Students will conduct a race and class analysis of the NYC subway system (see handout for more information)
